Stuff I did this weekend - upcycling, roller derby & morning tea

Hello World! Hope you all had a good weekend - here's a few things I got up to this weekend. First of all I made a new dress.

This dress is an upcycle - I bought a vintage dress a while back because I loved the fabric. However, the dress was hideous. The body was literally two squares sewn together (not flattering) and it had a horrible cowl neck.
So much ugly in one dress - but I LOVED the fabric and I decided I must have it, and then it sat around in my sewing pile for literally months.

Here's the ugly frock reborn using my vintage maudella 5619 pattern. The blue fabrics are the remnants of some fabric that Emi gave me that I've already used to make an A-line skirt.
Unfortunately daylight savings is well and truly over here now so I had to get an indoor photo of this dress as by the time I returned home daylight was almost gone.
I actually prefer the back of this dress to the front as most of the pretty vintage fabric is on the back of the dress. The original dress pattern didn't have ties, but I felt like the frock didn't have quite as much shape as I like and I knew it would look weird with a belt. So I added some ties to give it some shape.

But the past weekend wasn't just about sewing! It was also about roller derby - I got to see my friend Jaimee skate as "Jammit Frame" for her team "Smash Malice". It was a pretty fun night, we went with our friend Andrew and then got some Mexican food afterwards. I even bought a Smash Malice tee shirt to wear to the next bout.

Finally I met up with Jaimee on Sunday for morning tea, we went to Martha's Pantry which is quite possibly the most girly cafe in Wellington. Here's a few pictures.

I love the fans - they also have some very lady like hats you can wear whilst sipping your tea (or coffee).

Hope you all have a good week xoxo

Hello Kitty, Sprinkles, Vintage, Roller Derby & Blog Friends

This weekend was one of the busiest ones I've had in a while and it was a total blast. Had so much fun catching up with friends. It all started on Saturday afternoon with celebrating Eva's first birthday. Eva is the daughter of our friends Celia and Simon - I neededed to bring a plate along to the party. So I made Hello Kitty Fairy Bread. I was pretty happy with the the final result.

After the birthday party I met up with my friend Sadie for a nosy around the Fringe Markets where I bought a cute little teal shirt dress. We followed it up with a drink and something to nibble on at Expressoholic.

Later in the evening it was time to check out some more Roller Derby - this time it was our local league rather than an international game. We (well mostly I) decided to support "Brutal Pagent" unfortunatly they came in second to "Smash Malice". We have decided to work harder on supporters costumes for next time, which should be pretty fun as Smash Malice are a bunch of disgraced beauty queens.

I also had a rather lovely morning on Sunday - I got to meet a fellow blogger and all round lovely lady Helga Von Trollop. Check out her awesome blog for details of her time in Wellington and a photo of the two of us together. I hope I can head down south and visit her when our lovely Christchurch is a little less broken.

RCRD - Wellington vs Sydney

Last Saturday evening, Rich and I went to a roller derby bout. Our local league Richter City Roller Derby All Stars (for those reading this not from NZ - Wellington has a lot of earthquakes) vs The Sydney assassins. This was the first derby game I've seen since I've been home and it was awesome. Unfortunately our girls lost but they put up a pretty amazing fight against Sydney. Here's a photo I took at the game with my phone - unfortunately my camera battery ran out shortly before I got to the game and I didn't have a chance to charge it. I did make one mistake on the night though - I didn't have a chance to go home and change before the game, so I was wearing red and black which are my favourite colours. Unfortunately, they are also the colours of the Sydney assassins! I should have been wearing purple and orange for RCRD!

So many people at the game were dressed up in great costumes - next time I will make a better effort with what I wear to a bout and support my league. I already have my thinking cap on - although I think I may be in Auckland for the next game. Plus that game will be between our two local teams Smash Malice and Brutal Padgent and a brand new team will be at that bout as well. If you're in Wellington you should go for sure!

The half time show at the game was a kapa haka group - Ti Tira Whakaau Kapa Haka. The group consisted of less than twenty people but their song filled the whole stadium. There were amazing. Plus they had amazing poi skills - the woman leading the poi could throw one poi in the air, then catch it and keep on twirling. It was so impressive. Are there any other derby fans out there? Any ideas for any great costumes consisting of the colours purple and orange for the next RCRD All Stars game?
