Dalek Love Quilt

I think my favourite craft projects are Trees and Rich joint efforts and this quilt is one of those joint efforts. I'd like to share with you all our "Dalek Love Quilt".

So the fabric is a little bit crinkled in this photo, but it is a pretty awesome quilt. Rich designed the fabric and we bought it from Spoonflower. Sadly, this is the only "dalek love" fabric that will exist in the world ever as the BBC contacted Spoonflower and asked for the design to be taken down as it was in breach of copyright.

his fabric does include daleks which the BBC does own copyright for - but I thought Rich's design would be far enough removed from the original to cause any issues. There's not much that can be done about it I guess, but it does mean this quilt really is one of a kind.

I used some fake fur for the back of the quilt - I used fleece for my last couple of quilts, but I didn't have enough when I decided I needed to finish this quilt NOW so I used what was in my stash. I think it turned out pretty well.

Here's a close up of the fabric - daleks and love hearts galore! Although you can't buy this fabric on Spoonflower anymore, Rich does have some other fabric in his shop if anyone wants to check it out.

Rock n' roll quilt - part II

So its all been a bit quiet over here lately! Winter is in full swing and as its dark when I leave for work and when I get home there's really not much light to take any outfit photos. I have also had a distinct lack of "sewjo" (that's sewing mojo) lately so I haven't made many things. But I DID finally finish up my rock n roll quilt. It's my first ever quilt and a pretty cool recycling project for a music nerd.

Some of the tee shirts were picked up at op shops but others we have had for a long time and haven't been able to let go of! One of The Cure t-shirts on the quilt I bought when Rich and I went to Auckland to see The Cure (along with our good friends Conor and Sue).  Some of the t-shirts used are t-shirts I bought for Rich as birthday gifts - like the tee shirt with the image of Iggy Pop. I love that we have been able to keep all these old tees but put them to good use at the same time.

I lined the back of the tee shirt quilt with some animal print fleece from Arthur Toye - because animal print is rock n roll baby!!

Now I need to get onto some of the other projects I have been thinking of creating - come back sewjo!

Homemakin' : Week Four

I am coming to realise that my goal of doing something rad for the apartment each and every week is not really going to happen with everything else I have going on in my life. But you know I'm totally ok with that, I'm going to do what I can when I can and be happy with that - its not like I live in a total dive or anything. I just want it to be the wee bit nicer.

On to this weeks Homemakin' project,  this is a big one so its going to be a two weekend project and it involves a lot of t-shirts. About a million years ago I saw a blog post where someone had made a quilt from all of her boyfriends old band t-shirts. I thought that was a pretty rad idea, Rich and I already had a few band t-shirts we couldn't part with and I looked out for other t-shirts when I was out op-shopping.

However, before I could completed my stash of t-shirts we decided to leave the country, but not all was lost for the t-shirts as old t-shirts make perfect packaging material for breakables.

When we were at Mum and Dad's at Christmas we unearthed some of our treasures - including breakables wrapped in the t-shirt collection. I decided it was time for these t-shirts to reach their full potential and become a quilt, so I bought them home with me. Last weekend I cut them up and sewed them all together to make the quilt, it isn't complete yet as I want to buy some fleece for the back part, when that's done I can show you all the finished article.

But for now let's have check out an initial WIP shot, this is a pretty big quilt for a queen bed so its kind of hard to show you the WHOLE quilt when its not on a bed, but you get the general idea.

This quilt is very rock n' roll but also extremely soft - some of the t-shirts were VERY well loved before they came together as a quilt. I was going to show you a few close up shots but blogger is acting all crazy and doesn't want to upload any more photos! So you'll all just have to wait for the completed project for more.

Lukah's Birthday Quilt

I'm actually a pretty terrible Aunt - I wrote my nephew Lukah's birthday in my calendar on the wrong date which means his birthday present is a few days late.

This year Lukah is turning five and I'm sure that lots of people will buy him school related things (I already know he's received a Ben 10 school bag) so I decided to make him a wee TV/Movie quilt. 

I decided to make a kind of "farm themed" TV quilt as Lukah does like spending lots of time at my Mum and Dad's place on the farm and my brother is a farm worker so the farm is a big part of his life.

I bought this farm fabric specifically for the quilt - its kind of cute and cartoon like - I did want to get one that mostly had cows as the region my family farms is primarily a dairy region. But I couldn't find anything cute and cow specific - I think I was maybe being a little TOO specific wanting cute cow cartoon fabric!

I also added a square of fabric left over from my "horsing about dress" as it seemed to work in pretty well with the whole farm theme.

I really wanted an earthy green for the fleece for the backing fabric - however, its coming into summer here and there wasn't a huge amount fleece at my local fabric store. So instead I chose this almost fluro green - hopefully Lukah likes bright colours as much as I do.

This wee quilt is off to its new home with Lukah in Taranaki tomorrow - I really hope he likes it.
