Me Made May - Week Five

Week five is also known as "The week I was totally sick of having photos taken each day" - hence the photos are a bit crap! There's nothing much new to see here (well one new thing). I just wanted you guys to know I ALMOST made it to the end of the month wearing something made by me each day.

So I didn't quite make it to the full 31 days! On Saturday I went to Armageddon and wore my Hell Bunny eyeball dress. However, I did run out to the store in the morning to buy some tights whilst wearing my monthly stitch vintage pattern challenge dress, so that kind of counts right?

FINAL THOUGHTS.....

 

Generally I don't have any problems with having my photo taken, but a whole month taking photos every day is just too exhausting! 

 

When it comes to dress making - I am very much a "dress maker" rather than a top, skirt or anything else maker. I really need to try and make a few more separates.

 

I do really favour making things from cottons and May is pretty much winter in NZ! I spend most of the winter months wearing my beloved vintage polyester dresses because I find them so warm without too much bulk. But I DO have merino waiting to be stitched up for winter. I really must get onto that to keep myself warm.  

Also, I think I will do self stitched September this year - it will mean I can actually take outfit posts in daylight!

So let's be honest, I don't shop for new ready to wear clothes often. I had meant to sew a costume for Armageddon new weekend but life got in the way and I haven't made one. So I decided to take the stress off myself and buy some new things.

I'm still not sure what my costume will be - but I'm sure Ria will help with hair and make up and I will end up looking terrifying (I hope).

Me Made May 2014 - Week Three

So this week I've  been thinking, wouldn't it be great to have an alternative Me Made May for us southern hemisphere folks in our spring? Mostly because taking photos in the dark is a pain in the butt.

As for noticing wardrobe gaps in my wardrobe this week? Well its the same lessons over and over, I need more skirts and tops and cardis and generally warm things.

Also, I'm basically going to kill this pair of  brown boots and I'm wearing them pretty much every day. I need more boots I think.....

Today was a beautiful winters day, so Rich and I went for a walk around town and went to the National War Memorial.

I should have asked Rich to take a photo of me whilst I was at the war memorial, but I kind of forget. Sorry guys it another "legs" photos day.

'Folksy Lady' Skirt

Recently I picked up a pretty great sewing book called "Sew Everything Workshop" at a second hand bookshop in town. The book came with patterns and I thought it could be a bit of a risk buying a book like this second hand - what if only half the patterns were there? Or if they were there, but had all been cut out in the wrong size? I decided to buy it anyway as it seemed to have a lot of great general sewing information. If the project patterns weren't all there I could deal with it.

It turns out that ALL THE PATTERNS were still with the book and un-cut! I decided to start with a patterns called the "Easy Breezy Wrap Skirt". It's a very simple little wrap skirt, but it does have a really lovely shape.

So the perspective of this photo is kind of messed up and my head looks freaking HUGE - maybe its just because its filled with so many brains.

I made the skirt with some fabric that Emi gave me - when I started out I was kind of like "what a great idea, I'll make a plain red skirt, because every thing I make is patterned - I need some basic me made pieces".

Then when I finished up I decided it was the most boring skirt I've ever owned and quickly dug out some trim I had (20 cents from the hospice shop in Levin) and sewed it around the bottom of the skirt.

Trim makes everything better......also I decided that I rather liked giving my creations names after the "put a bird on it dress" and I decided this trim was rather folksy, and therefore its my folksy lady dress.                                                                 

Obviously when you think of folk - you can't help but think of "the almost award-winning fourth-most-popular folk duo in New Zealand."

Me Made May 2014 - Week Two

It's time for Me Made May week two! I'm actually surprised at how many "me made" items I have in my wardrobe. I haven't worn the same item twice yet. 

However, I do now for sure pretty much all I seem to make are skirts and tops - I really need to make more tops and cardis.

The day we decided it was a good idea for me to pose with the guitar and look like some kind of  country singer songwriter. In case you're wondering, I can't play the guitar. Rich however has played guitar since he was a teenager and tired to teach me once about 10 years ago - but I lost interest in about five minutes.

I wore today's Me Made outfit to Te Papa as Rich I went to check out two exhibitions they currently have displayed about China - Throne of  Emperor and Shi Lu: A revolution in paint. 

If you are in Wellington you should totally go and check them out as they are both amazing. In celebration of the Chinese exhibitions Te Papa had some pretty Chinese Lanterns on display.

Also today was a stunning autumn day - instead of a miserably cold one!

Me Made May 2014

Hello All - This year I've decided to take part in Me Made May, I would have told you all about it sooner, but broken computer makes for tough blogging times!

What is Me Made May 2014 you may ask? Well you can see more details here, but it pretty much means I'm going to wear one item of clothing I made myself every day in May. I was officially meant to sign up before May started, but as the computer died, that just didn't happen.

For MMM 2014 I am planning on wearing ONE item of clothing I have made each day in May - some people are super sewists and can wear a whole MMM outfit, but I'm not there yet, so one item of MMM  clothing is as good as it gets!
