Travel Memories Tuesday - Kung Hei Fat Choy

Kung Hei Fat Choy - Happy Chinese New Year! This weekend I went along to Chinese New Year Celebrations in Wellington with a group of friends and it reminded me of the time I was in Kuala Lumpur for Chinese New Year. My trip had been planned around my cousins wedding in Phuket, so it was just a happy coincidence that I was around for Chinese New Year.
So many buildings around the city were decorated and they looked amazing - so much red, so many lanterns!

I loved that there whilst there were huge decorations in the malls there were also simple red lanterns everywhere - including just in trees along the foot path. There was a real festival feeling in the city, it was just awesome.

Although the Wellington celebrations weren't quite as dramatic last weekend - I still had a pretty fun afternoon watching the parade in the sunshine and eating delicious food. Here's a few photos, I always love the Chinese New Year Parade. The Chinese dragons are always so much fun.

I hope the year of the horse is a good year for you!

Year of the Rabbit

This morning I ventured out to Lyall Bay to visit my friend Fiona, she lives in the most fantastic little nautical house and this is her front door. I've always admired it - but today I thought I'd actually take a picture.Once of the reasons I decided to head out to Fiona's place was to visit her new pets - two rabbits. They are super cute don't you think? Fi and I spent our morning hanging out in her garden with the rabbits drinking tea and eating summer fruit. Fabulous!
In the afternoon I returned to town to watch the Chinese New Years parade with Rich and our friend Nankz. The parade was much smaller than I remeber it being other years but it was still pretty great - I really love Chinese Dragons and Lions and the Chinese Opera Costumes. The smaller Chinese Lions were being fed lettuce - I am not sure what the significance of this is but if anyone out there knows please tell me. It's so intriguing.

Wellington Sevens Parade

This weekend is the Wellington Sevens - I am not a huge fan of the Sevens to be honest. Too many men dressed in togs, bikini's and short frocks, my hairdresser referred to it today as a straight man's hero parade and that is a pretty apt description.

Already today I've been asked what "Are you suppose to be" - my response was "A Wellingtonian". I've also seen a man streaking down the waterfront and seen all manner of insane costumes. Rich also got asked if he was dressed as John Travolta.

Although I am not a big fan of the Sevens, I do like some of the costumes and I also like the Sevens parade which brings some life to Lambton Quay at lunch time. Here's a few photo's from the lunch time parade.
